Projects

To get a hands-on project-based experience for everyone, ITE@UIUC offers a great opportunity for everyone to get involved with transportation. Our team consists of Transportation Data Science, Infrastructure Design, Blog and more! Feel free to reach out to us if you would like to get involved with fun transportation projects!

High Speed Rail Project

The high speed rail project is designed to examine the benefits and advocate for a true high speed rail system between Chicago and St. Louis to improve travel times and bring the communities connected closer together. Indirectly, it could also be the backbone for a better Illinois and Midwest rail network. For this project, we will compare the alternatives given by the state of Illinois and looking at metrics such as corridor population, travel time, distance, and mode speed to come up with the best route to get from Chicago to St. Louis.

Waste Transport Project

Chambana is a community with a tradition of sustainable transportation. CUMTD is renowned for its 100% low/zero-emission fleet, and we aim to replicate this success. Our research explores the feasibility of modernizing UIUC’s garbage truck fleet with alternative fuel vehicles. On one hand, we will review viable garbage truck models available on the market and operational case studies of low/zero-emission fleets to identify one or several most feasible options for Chambana. On the other hand, we will use ArcGIS and algorithms to optimize routes to save energy and mitigate the impact of alternative energy vehicles’ range limitations on operations. Currently, we have completed preliminary data and literature collection, and the next phase of research will begin soon. If you are interested in joining, please contact shangs2@illinois.edu!
